New Format from 1st September 2001

A new format for number plates is introduced from 1st September, 2001. This is to British Standard BS AU 145d. The format applies to new registrations from 1st September, and to replacement number plates for vehicles registered after 1st January, 1973.

If you have any questions about the regulations, please call us. We'd be pleased to help.

The New Format

Number plates will all be seven characters, using only the prescribed font, in the format as shown below.

The first two letters are the local memory tag. In this instance 'A' represents Anglia, and 'B' shows the car was registered at the Peterborough DVLA office. For a full list of local memory tags, click here.

The two numbers are the Age Identifier. The number '51' indicates the registration age as being from September 2001 to February 2002. Registrations from March 2002 to August 2002 will have an Age Identifier of '02', and so on with changes twice yearly. For a full list of Age Identifiers, click here.

The final three letters are random, and serve to make each registration mark unique.

Logos

The only allowable logo is the GB Euro symbol, in the prescribed layout. If used, this logo must be positioned on the extreme left of the number plate, as in the examples below:

?

Borders

A single line border is permissible in any colour.

Supplier Information

Each number plate must include the name of the supplying outlet together with the postcode. This is to be situated centrally at the base of the plate to the prescribed maximum size.
