Local Memory Tags used on Number Plates from 1st September 2001
A new format for number plates is introduced from 1st September, 2001 as British Standard BS AU 145d. The format applies to new registrations from 1st September, and to replacement number plates for vehicles registered after 1st January, 1973.
The New Format
Number plates will all be seven characters, in the format as shown below.
The first two letters are the Local Memory Tag. In the number plate above, 'A' represents Anglia, and 'B' shows the car was registered at the Peterborough DVLA office.

The number '51' indicates the registration age as being from September 2001 to February 2002. Registrations from March 2002 to August 2002 will have an Age Identifier of '02'. The list below shows how the Age Identifier will be apply from September 2001 to February 2011.
